I just looked up love in the Oxford English Dictionary. Why? Don’t I know what love is by now? Yes, but it’s so intangible. My own words fall short. The dictionary falls way short, too. I know love when I see it, and it inspires me because it fills my heart with joy and hope. It makes the many mundane responsibilities I have as a business owner less irksome (charging batteries on a Friday night, anyone?), because my biggest responsibility is simply to show people the love they feel for each other. I think a photo of Brittany and Kyle belongs in the dictionary next to the definition: Love, to have immeasurable passion for. Brittany and Kyle, thank you for this window into all the sweetness you two share. See you at the St. Regis for a grand party later this year!

NYC City Hall Wedding :: Jessica & Marcus

When Jessica contacted me about photographing her middle-of-winter wedding in New York City around the time single digit temps hit the city, I began to worry about certain deficiencies in my southern girl wardrobe. Down parka that can double as a sleeping bag? No. Gloves? Cashmere, no good for dialing in camera settings. Hat? Um… Nevertheless I arrived in New York excited and that excitement increased when I met Jess for dinner the night before the wedding. She is expressive and funny and warm (figuratively and literally, since she does have a great parka), and I knew an adventure was in store the next day. Since she ask for “no cheesy posed photos”, I simply shot the story as of her wedding day to Marcus as it unfolded. Here is that story.

All of this pretty is Beth & Brad’s wedding at the Georgian Terrace Hotel. Clearly this was the perfect gown for Beth, doesn’t she look stunning in it? I especially appreciated the opportunity to capture Brad’s relationship with his dad, brother, and grandfather. As usual, I tried to shoot how the day felt rather than simply what it looked like- I hope the images will always bring back both the sweetness of exchanging vows and the excitement of the party.

Montaluce Wedding :: Leah & Adam

This was a beautiful wedding, but more importantly it was a deeply felt and appreciated event for Leah and Adam and their families. I recently watched a documentary on the German painter Gerard Ricther in which he said, to paraphrase, that words cannot describe painting, only painting can describe painting because it is its own way of thinking. I feel the same applies to photography. When people ask, “What is your style?” I hope they will look closely at the images I create for the answer because it is not something I can adequately say. I have literally spent my life making images and I don’t have a soundbite to describe why I continue to be passionate about this pursuit. I can only hope that by doing so, I provide people who connect with the way I see the world a means to recall their beloved moments.

Atlanta Botanical Gardens Engagement Photos :: Jennifer & Kevin

Gorgeous color abounded for Jennifer & Kevin’s engagement session last fall, and their dogs were amazingly well-behaved. I believe one of my dogs just said, “So?” and raised an insouciant eyebrow. We began the engagement session in the Atlanta Botanical Gardens rose garden, where Jennifer & Kevin’s ceremony is set to take place this spring. Light was beautiful all over the grounds, and Jennifer’s dress added a lively pop of cobalt blue against the foliage and architecture. Although it was hard to tear away from the photo opportunities at the Gardens, we eventually made our way to Piedmont Park to meet up with Jennifer’s parents who were kind enough to join us with the adorable Carolina and Marley. This was one of my last engagement sessions of 2012, and a great way to wind down the season. I’m very much looking forward to working with wedding planner Lindsay Pitt of TOAST! for Jennifer & Kevin’s wedding in just a few months!

2012 was my busiest year ever, so much so that a lot of wonderful events haven’t yet made it to the blog. Montaluce is such a stunning location for a wedding, and Stephanie did an amazing job planning thoughtful details that characterized the day. She was very excited to submit her wedding photos to Style Me Pretty and I wasn’t surprised at all that the editors were happy to feature it on their Georgia wedding blog. Stephanie is a journalist and returned an eloquently composed response to their questions in record time! David’s focus was on the experience of the day and the memories that would be made. He shared a special toast of scotch with his groomsmen to start the festivities, and they looked so dapper in their J Crew suits.

Some days are cold and windy and gray and yet still amazingly fun for engagement photos. I drove in from a wedding in Tennessee to meet with Lauren & Adam, who in turn drove in from their home in Louisiana. This was our one and only day available for the shoot this fall, but the elements lent extra drama and liveliness to the images. Once aspect I value of an engagement session is the opportunity to get to know my clients and produce images to make them even more excited about what is to come on the wedding day. I definitely left this portrait session with an appreciation of both the graciousness and style of this lovely couple!
